Delirium is an abrupt disturbance in mental ability that results in confusion and disorientation. It’s common in hospitalized patients and the elderly.
Jennifer Duprey, DO, MPH, Medical Director of the ICU at both Elliot Hospital and Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, was recently interviewed by New Hampshire Magazine where she explained risk factors for delirium and measures that can be taken to prevent it or minimize it when it does occur.
“Delirium is most commonly seen in the elderly, but severity of illness is certainly one of the biggest risk factors, and that is independent of age,” says Dr. Duprey.
