Back in August 2018 we welcomed eight, third year medical students from University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Each of them to complete eight, six-week rotations within a variety of specialties.

We sat down with one of the students, Elizabeth Monis, to get her thoughts on the program so far.

How has the program been so far?

I have had an amazing 3rd year experience at SNHH. The faculty and staff have been so friendly and supportive and have made sure every rotation was a wonderful learning experience. My training here at SNHH has truly set the foundation for a strong medical career.

Which rotation has been your favorite/interests you the most?

Psychiatry was my very first rotation and was the perfect introduction to my clinical years. I discovered the world of mental health and learned that I have a true passion for helping those with mental and emotional disorders. Every day spent at the BHU, outpatient psych, and the annex in the ED, was a new adventure. My psychiatry rotation sparked a new found interest that I intend turn into my long term career. Dr. Sullivan, Dr. DiCesare, and Shannon, the psychiatry NP, have been incredible mentors and I hope to stay in touch with all three of them throughout my career.

What was it like working with the SNHH team within each rotation/specialty

Every single employee at SNHH has been nothing but warm and welcoming throughout the entire year. Every staff member was more than willing to teach me and make me feel comfortable within their department.

What has been your most memorable experience so far?

Too many to count, but one that sticks out to me at the moment was having the opportunity to first assist the MGH pediatric surgeon during my surgery rotation. The experience truly shows the vast learning opportunities SNHH brings to their students.

What is your favorite part about the city of Nashua?

My favorite part about Nashua is that you are in the perfect location. You are only a few miles from Boston in one direction and outdoor activities in the other. Main Street is full of fun shops and restaurants, and the Pheasant Lane mall is a great place to spend a few free hours on the weekends.

What advice would you give to the next round of medical students we will be welcoming this summer?

Enjoy! This is going to be a great year! Take advantage of all the learning opportunities you are given. Advocate for yourselves, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

What have you done for fun in your spare time since you moved to the area?

Since moving to the area I have hiked some local trails, had dinner and a movie at Chunky’s, visited the Humane society multiple times, and painted numerous ceramic pieces at You’re Fired. I also visited Canobie Lake Park more times that I can count.

What is your favorite restaurant in Nashua?

Shorty’s is my go to place. Great tacos and delicious Margaritas.

What are your plans for your fourth year once you have finished your time at SNHH?

To come back to SNHH of course! All eight of the current UNECOM medical students are planning to spend part of their 4th year back at SNHH. I will also be traveling around New England auditioning for residency programs. I feel confident that SNHH has prepared me well for my 4th year rotations and beyond!

Thanks for joining us Elizabeth!
