Congrats to the latest High Five SHINE Award Winner – Tom Davenport, Phlebotomist, SNHMC Laboratory
“As a Sexual Assault Examiner and ER nurse, having Tom as night phlebotomist is always a bonus; he is the epitome of a team player. Several weeks ago, one of my sexual assault patients needed her blood drawn. She was very traumatized, by what had happened to her and nervous to have a male phlebotomist in the room.
I stayed at the bedside for everyone’s comfort. Tom approached her with kindness, compassion, and professionalism. He explained every step and obtained her consent before touching her. He made what could have been a worsening situation much better for the patient. The patient later told me, multiple times, how grateful she was at how kindly he treated her.
Later the same night with another sexual assault patient, Tom again drew the blood. He again approached the patient with kindness and treated her with dignity and respect. He helped coach her through when she started hyperventilating at the thought of a blood draw. She was later surprised that she “did not even feel it.
We are fortunate to have such a compassionate professional as part of our care team. I am grateful to partner with Tom … he is a very hard worker and is always willing to help his fellow coworkers. He does not shy away from difficult tasks … and he is a role model to others and portrays the hospital’s core values.”
